Economic impacts of the UMA on labor issues

February 13, 2024
Francisco Trejo Gutiérrez

As of February 1, 2024, penalties for non-compliance with labor standards were increased. The above, because, like every year, the increase to the Measurement and Update Unit (UMA) came into force, and when the reference value is impacted, the fines or sanctions derived from such non-compliance are impacted in that same percentage. It should be noted that the increase this year was 4.66%, a percentage by which inflation increased, which is much less than the impact of minimum wages, which on this occasion was 20%.

As a result of the increase in the UMA, in 2024 the values that are in force as of February 1 are the following:

*Daily: $108.57

*Monthly: $3,330.53

*Annual: $39,606.36

It is worth mentioning that the creation of the UMA in some cases could be a benefit and in other cases a disadvantage. For example, in the case of the payment of worker-employer contributions or sanctions for labor breaches, the reference to the UMA represents a benefit. However, when it comes to the payment of pensions in general, the reference to the UMA represents a disadvantage, and if this continues, the pension payment will be increasingly lower in relation to the increases that are granted to minimum wages, since that the gap between the UMA and the minimum wage will become wider every year.
