The relevance of workplace harassment in labor relations

In a news story released on January 1, 2022, a Japanese automaker has reached a financial settlement in a lawsuit blaming them for the suicide of one of their employees due to overwork and workplace harassment. The company promised an investigation into the case to prevent a recurrence.

Deaths from overwork and job stress, including suicides, are a common problem in a workaholic Japanese society. Problems with abusive bosses have also gained attention.

The Nagoya High Court ruled in September that the employee’s death was related to severe work stress he suffered before taking his own life in 2010.

Regardless of the culture we are talking about, workplace and sexual harassment are common in work relationships. Therefore, we must pay special attention to the way the employees work in organizations. Tools should be used to implement preventive and/or corrective measures, through work plans, in order to improve working relationships and conditions. Among such tools are the encouragement to implement an approach to employees, through analysis and management instruments, in order to diagnose staff satisfaction at least once a year.
